Tips for choosing the best flowers

Choosing flowers might seem complicated, but it can be as simple as choosing your recipient's favourite colour or flower. You can also buy flowers by occasion and price, giving you multiple ways to pick the perfect blooms. Think about the occasion behind your gesture. Different flowers symbolise different sentiments. For example, roses are commonly associated with love and romance, while lilies are often used for sympathy and condolences. Matching the flowers to the occasion can make your gesture more meaningful.

Each flower has its symbolism and meaning. Here are a few popular choices for different occasions:

  • Birthdays: Bright and cheerful flowers like sunflowers or daisies can be a great choice to celebrate someone's special day.
  • Anniversaries or romantic occasions: Red roses are a classic choice for expressing love and passion. Other romantic options include tulips, orchids, or lilies.
  • Get well soon: Choose vibrant and uplifting flowers like sunflowers, gerbera daisies, or brightly coloured mixed bouquets to convey cheer and well wishes.
  • Sympathy or condolences: White lilies or chrysanthemums are often chosen for sympathy arrangements.
  • Congratulations: Celebratory occasions call for vibrant and joyful flowers like lilies, gerbera daisies, or mixed bouquets in bold colours.

Select appropriate colours: The colour of flowers can also convey different meanings and emotions. Here are some commonly associated colour meanings:

  • Red: Symbolises love, passion, and romance. It's an ideal choice for expressing deep affection.
  • Pink: Represents gentleness, grace, and admiration. It's often associated with gratitude or sending well wishes.
  • Yellow: Signifies joy, friendship, and happiness. It's a cheerful colour suitable for celebrating milestones or uplifting occasions.
  • White: Represents purity, innocence, and reverence. It's often chosen for sympathy or as a symbol of new beginnings.
  • Purple: Symbolises royalty, admiration, and elegance. It's an excellent choice for conveying admiration or celebrating accomplishments.
  • Orange: Represents enthusiasm, energy, and warmth. It's a vibrant colour that can convey a sense of excitement or encouragement.

Consider the presentation: How the flowers are arranged and presented can enhance their impact. Buy a well-designed bouquet or floral arrangement that suits the recipient's style and preferences. You can choose between a traditional vase arrangement, a hand-tied bouquet, or a stylish flower box.

Tips to make your flowers last longer

At Eflorist, we take great pride in ensuring our flowers are of the highest quality and last as long as possible. Our bouquets are often delivered in bud form. Your flowers may appear fragile and sensitive but are not dying or damaged. With a little bit of TLC and care, they will blossom into beautiful blooms!

  • Trim the stems: When you receive or prepare the flowers, trim the stems at an angle using sharp, clean scissors or floral shears. Cutting the stems at an angle increases the surface area for water absorption, allowing the flowers to hydrate more effectively.
  • Use a clean vase: Before placing the flowers in a vase, ensure they are clean and free from dirt or residue. Bacteria can thrive in dirty vases.
  • Add flower food: Many floral arrangements come with packets of flower food. These contain nutrients that help nourish the flowers and extend their longevity.
  • Change the water: Change the water every two to three days to keep it fresh. Before refilling, rinse the vase and trim the stems again. Fresh water helps prevent bacterial growth and keeps the flowers hydrated.
  • Display in a cool location: Place the flowers in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. Excessive heat can cause the flowers to wilt more quickly.
  • Keep fresh flowers away from ripening fruit: Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas that can age the flowers sooner.
  • Remove anything that dies: Removing the dead flowers and not letting foliage fall below the water line can help extend the life of the flowers.

Rose care tips

Cut roses are delicate and can wilt prematurely with incorrect care. Thankfully, looking after them requires only a few steps:

  • Gently wrap each rose head in tissue paper or kitchen roll to shield them from harm.
  • Slice 2-3 cm from the stem bases at a diagonal angle with a sharp knife.
  • Occasionally misting the petals with a fine water spray can help hydrate the flowers and prolong their freshness.
  • Avoid placing the vase of roses in extreme temperatures, as excessive heat can cause the flowers to deteriorate more quickly.
  • Replace the water in the vase every two to three days with fresh lukewarm water. Before refilling, recut the stems slightly to ensure they can absorb water effectively.
